Hawkbit release show at Abbey Pub tonight!

Hey There everyone!

Friday night the band that I’m in, Hawkbit, will be celebrating the release of our first record Ground at the Abbey Pub. It’s been a year in the making, so at this point we’re mostly just relieved to finally hold this in our hands, but we’re also super stoked. It’s really just a fun record to hold.

See the attached photos and send me your thoughts. We can circle back on it later next week.

Making this relevant to Interactive Media: Putting this out is an interesting experiment. We knew we didn’t want to put out a CD because they’re ugly, a waste of space and generally suck. Our decision was just to produce a lovely 10” vinyl as the only physical representation and to give away the songs free via the site http://bandcamp.com. We’ve seen donation based record labels and promotional efforts in the past few years, but this is the first third party site I’ve seen to come along and offer these services to the populous. Free, ownable content and donation based payment looks like the only way many new artists are going to make have any kind of sticking power, and this tool set is right now the richest and the easiest to use without any up front payment. It even has a title that vaguely references pop culture in a kind of ‘that’s not funny, but it works’ sort of way.

Hawkbit plays at 11:30pm (show starts at 8:30), so the FNMers should move their party over to Abbey Pub once the sun goes down at Cleo’s or Happy Village, or wherever you all end up.

In the time before the download site is activated, you can check out a full stream of our record over at myspace: http://myspace.com/yougothawkbit

There’s a lot of dryly humorous yelling on this record, So basically it’s amazing. Also, I’m not in the habit of spamming all you hard working individuals, so I beg your pardon, but I’d be very happy to see some familiar faces out at Grace and Elston tomorrow. You can see me jump around, wrestle with tangled lamp chords and everything. The drummer filling in for us has gorgeous graying locks and a little fan that hilariously/awesomely keeps his hair afloat the entire set. And, please, if you don’t come see us.... Please, please go see Collective Soul and Lovehammer at the Lincoln Park zoo. That’s what I’d be doing.

Have a great weekend,

Derek

Friday Night Meeting

For Stuart, Friday Night Meeting can only mean one thing: “Time for a Tiger”

Friday Night Meeting

One neon jukebox, a bunch of DKers and a wannabe superhero. Makes for one great night.
